While I’m sure their ancestors worked insanely hard to provide these amazing benefits to their descendants, not all of us have been so fortunate. Since my parents immigrated to the U.S. as newly-weds, my siblings and I couldn’t go to them for help when we struggled to navigate American schools, jobs, and culture. It was all new to the them too! As the first-generation to experience 21st-Century American Success, we regularly have to learn societal norms the hard way as experienced mentors are hard to find.
